Did You Know!
Your Liver Stores Nearly a Liter of Blood at Any Moment
The liver is one of the most blood-rich organs in the body. At any given time, it holds about 10–13% of your body’s total blood supply—roughly one pint (around half a liter) or more depending on body size.
What makes this even more unusual is that the liver receives blood from two completely different sources:
- The hepatic artery, bringing oxygen-rich blood from the heart
- The portal vein, carrying nutrient-rich blood from the digestive system
Inside the liver, this blood flows through tiny channels called sinusoids, where toxins, medications, alcohol, and nutrients are processed.
Because of this unique design, the liver essentially acts as a biological filtration and processing plant for everything you eat or drink.
