You Can Lose the Ability to Recognize Faces (Even Loved Ones)

There’s a disorder called Prosopagnosia, or “face blindness,” where people cannot recognize faces—even those of close family.

  • They rely on voice, clothing, or posture instead
  • Some people don’t even recognize their own reflection
  • It can be present from birth or caused by brain injury

This happens due to dysfunction in the fusiform gyrus, a region specialized for facial recognition.
