Just as amputees may feel sensations in limbs that no longer exist (known as phantom limb syndrome), studies have shown that people who lose sight or hearing may experience similar sensations in their “phantom” vision or hearing. The brain may continue to “map” sensory inputs that no longer exist, leading to experiences like visual or auditory hallucinations. This highlights how deeply the brain is wired to process sensory information, even in the absence of physical stimuli.
