The stomach produces hydrochloric acid, which is strong enough to dissolve metal. This highly acidic environment (with a pH of around 2) helps break down food and kill bacteria that may be ingested with food. Despite its corrosive nature, the stomach lining is protected by a layer of mucus that prevents the acid from damaging the stomach itself.
