While most genetic information is passed vertically from parent to offspring, there’s evidence that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) also occurs in humans, although rarely. HGT is more commonly associated with bacteria and other single-celled organisms, where genes can be transferred between different individuals and even between different species. In humans, HGT events are believed to be extremely rare but have been identified, particularly involving the incorporation of viral DNA into the human genome over evolutionary time.
