The pancreas plays a key role in controlling blood sugar. It contains clusters of cells called islets of Langerhans, which include insulin-producing beta cells. When blood sugar levels are high, these cells release insulin to help store glucose in cells. When blood sugar is low, the pancreas releases glucagon to signal the liver to release stored glucose.
