Within the pancreas, there are clusters of cells called the Islets of Langerhans, named after the German pathologist Paul Langerhans who discovered them. These islets contain different types of cells, including beta cells, which secrete insulin; alpha cells, which produce glucagon; and other cells producing additional hormones like somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide.
