Veins Contain One-Way Valves — But Not Everywhere

Unlike arteries, many veins contain one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward — especially in the legs, where blood must travel upward against gravity.

However, here’s the rarely known part:

👉 Not all veins have valves.

Veins in the brain and some deep chest veins lack these structures. This is one reason pressure changes in the chest or abdomen can sometimes affect blood flow to the head.

When leg vein valves weaken or fail, blood can pool — leading to varicose veins or, in more serious cases, clot formation.
