Did You Know!
The lungs have several defense mechanisms to protect against harmful pathogens and particles present in the air. One remarkable defense mechanism is the action of cilia—tiny hair-like structures lining the airways. These cilia constantly beat in a coordinated manner to sweep mucus and trapped particles out of the lungs, helping to prevent infections and keep the airways clear. Additionally, specialized immune cells in the lungs, such as macrophages, engulf and destroy foreign invaders, contributing to the lung’s ability to fight off infections.
