Neurons are the basic structural and functional units of the nervous system. Communication between neurons occurs through electrical and chemical signals. When a neuron is stimulated, it generates an electrical impulse that travels along its axon. At the synapse, the electrical signal is converted into a chemical signal (neurotransmitters) that crosses the synaptic gap to stimulate or inhibit the next neuron. This process allows for the transmission of information within the nervous system.
