Some People Believe Their Loved Ones Have Been Replaced by Impostors

A rare psychiatric condition called Capgras syndrome can cause someone to believe that a spouse, parent, child, or close friend has been replaced by an identical-looking impostor.

Even though the person recognizes the familiar face, they may insist that the individual is not really their loved one.

Researchers believe this unusual delusion may involve disruptions in how the brain connects facial recognition with emotional familiarity.

Capgras syndrome can occur alongside conditions such as schizophrenia, dementia, or certain neurological disorders.
