Your liver can shrink and regrow multiple times—but only if one specific signal isn’t blocked
The liver is famous for regeneration, but here’s the obscure part: it doesn’t regrow automatically. It relies on a chemical “permission signal” released by platelets in your blood. Certain chronic conditions—and even long-term use of some common medications—can block that signal, dramatically reducing the liver’s ability to heal itself even when damage is mild.
This is why two people with the same liver injury can recover very differently.
