A Rare Syndrome Can Make Healthy Limbs Feel Like They Don’t Belong

Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID), formerly called Body Integrity Identity Disorder, is a neurological and psychological condition in which someone feels that one of their healthy limbs does not belong to their body. Some individuals experience overwhelming distress because of this mismatch between their brain’s body map and their physical body. Researchers believe differences in brain regions involved in body perception may contribute to the disorder, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
