You Can Be Allergic to Exercise

One of the most surprising and rarely discussed allergic conditions is called exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

People with this condition can experience a serious allergic reaction during or shortly after physical activity, including jogging, dancing, or even brisk walking.

Symptoms may include itching, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and, in severe cases, a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

What’s particularly unusual is that some people only experience these reactions when they exercise after eating certain foods, such as wheat or shellfish. They may tolerate the food normally when they aren’t exercising.

This condition is known as food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis.

Surprising Fact: A person can eat a particular food without problems and exercise without problems, but combining the two can trigger a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Although rare, this condition is important to recognize because severe reactions require immediate emergency treatment.
