Not all genetic disorders are inherited from parents.
Many genetic conditions result from “de novo” mutations—new DNA changes that occur spontaneously in a sperm cell, egg cell, or shortly after conception. Conditions such as some cases of achondroplasia (a form of dwarfism) and certain autism-related disorders can arise even when there is no family history of the condition.
