Some Muscle Disorders Can Affect the Heart Before the Skeletal Muscles

Many people associate muscle disorders with weakness in the arms and legs, but certain genetic conditions can first damage the heart muscle. Disorders such as some forms of muscular dystrophy and mitochondrial diseases may lead to irregular heart rhythms or cardiomyopathy before noticeable muscle weakness develops. This is one reason why regular cardiac screening is recommended for people diagnosed with certain muscle disorders.
