Tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear can end up in the wrong place and cause intense vertigo.
In a condition called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), microscopic calcium-carbonate crystals become displaced and enter the inner ear’s semicircular canals. Certain head movements can then produce sudden spinning sensations. Surprisingly, specific head-positioning maneuvers can often move the crystals out of the affected canal.
