A Brain Disorder Can Make Someone Believe They Are Already Dead
One of the strangest documented neuropsychiatric conditions is Cotard syndrome, sometimes called walking corpse syndrome.
People experiencing this rare condition may genuinely believe they are dead, that their organs no longer exist, or that parts of their body have disappeared.
Despite being physically alive, their perception of their own existence becomes profoundly distorted.
Cotard syndrome has been reported in association with severe depression, psychotic disorders, and some neurological illnesses. Treatment of the underlying condition can sometimes resolve these beliefs.
