This unusual reaction is known as the Koebner phenomenon. In people with certain conditions, particularly psoriasis and vitiligo, new patches may sometimes develop in areas where the skin has been scratched, rubbed, burned, tattooed, or otherwise injured. The reaction doesn’t necessarily happen immediately; changes may appear days or weeks after the original injury. Researchers still study exactly why this occurs, but it demonstrates how physical trauma can interact with inflammatory and immune processes in surprisingly specific areas of the skin.
