A Rare Condition Can Make Skin Develop Tree-Bark-Like Growths
A very rare genetic skin disorder called epidermodysplasia verruciformis can make people unusually susceptible to certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV).
Affected individuals may develop persistent, wart-like lesions, sometimes forming thick growths that resemble tree bark, particularly on the hands and feet.
The condition is sometimes informally called tree man syndrome, although that label is not a formal medical diagnosis.
Certain forms of this disorder also increase the risk of developing skin cancer, making ongoing dermatological care especially important.
These conditions are medically documented, although they are rare and symptoms can vary significantly between individuals.
