Some Cell Disorders Don’t Appear Until Decades After Birth
Many people think genetic cell disorders are always present at birth, but some remain hidden for years.
Certain inherited mutations don’t cause noticeable symptoms until adulthood because damaged cells accumulate slowly over time. Disorders involving protein buildup, DNA repair problems, or gradual cell degeneration may not become apparent until a person reaches their 40s, 50s, or even later.
Examples include certain inherited neurological diseases, blood disorders, and some forms of adult-onset muscular dystrophy.
Interesting fact: A person can carry a disease-causing genetic mutation for decades before enough damaged cells accumulate to produce the first symptoms.
