A Person’s Bones Can Become Abnormally Dense Yet Still Be Fragile
Most people associate weak bones with osteoporosis, which causes bones to lose strength and become more susceptible to fractures.
However, a rare disorder called osteopetrosis, sometimes referred to as marble bone disease, creates the opposite problem.
The bones become unusually dense because the body cannot properly break down old bone tissue.
Despite their increased density, these bones may fracture easily because their internal structure is abnormal. Severe cases can also interfere with bone marrow function.
