Your Liver Can “Feel” Pain—But Not the Way You Think

The liver itself actually has no pain receptors. So when people feel “liver pain,” it’s not coming from the liver tissue directly.

Instead, the discomfort comes from the capsule surrounding the liver (called Glisson’s capsule). When the liver becomes inflamed—due to conditions like fatty liver disease or hepatitis—it swells and stretches this outer layer, triggering pain.

👉 This is why early liver disease often goes unnoticed—it can progress silently until swelling becomes significant.
