Your Lungs Aren’t Sterile—They’re Home to Their Own Microbiome
For many years, scientists believed healthy lungs were completely sterile. Research has since shown that the lungs contain a unique community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms known as the lung microbiome. An imbalance in this microbiome may play a role in disorders such as asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic respiratory infections. Scientists are actively studying whether modifying the lung microbiome could become a future treatment for certain lung diseases.
