Some Skin Disorders Can Cause “Invisible” Pain Severe Enough to Mimic Nerve Disease

Certain rare skin conditions, such as small fiber neuropathy-linked dermatitis and erythromelalgia, can create intense burning sensations even when the skin appears mostly normal. In some cases, patients report pain triggered simply by warm temperatures or light touch. Doctors believe tiny nerve fibers inside the skin may malfunction, causing the skin itself to become a source of chronic nerve pain.
