A condition called Pellagra, caused by severe vitamin B3 deficiency, historically led to bizarre neurological symptoms including confusion, aggression, memory loss, and hallucinations. In the early 1900s, thousands of Americans suffered from it before scientists discovered the connection to poor nutrition. Doctors often summarized the disease with the “4 Ds”: dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death.
