A Rare Liver Disorder Can Turn the Skin Bronze

A little-known inherited condition called Hemochromatosis causes the body to absorb dangerously high levels of iron. Over time, excess iron can accumulate in the liver, heart, pancreas, and skin. One unusual symptom is a bronze or grayish skin discoloration, sometimes called “bronze diabetes.” Many people don’t realize they have the disorder until organ damage has already begun because symptoms often develop slowly over many years.
