Certain muscle diseases can be triggered by anesthesia. People with a genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia can develop a dangerous reaction to particular anesthetic drugs. Their skeletal muscles enter a hypermetabolic state that can cause muscle rigidity, rapidly rising carbon dioxide levels, and dangerously high body temperature. Importantly, someone may carry the susceptibility without knowing it until exposed to a triggering drug.
