Many people think brain disorders are caused only by genetics or injury, but some occur when the immune system attacks healthy brain tissue. This group of conditions, known as autoimmune encephalitis, can cause sudden memory loss, personality changes, hallucinations, seizures, or confusion. In some cases, these symptoms are initially mistaken for psychiatric illnesses before the underlying immune disorder is identified.
