Some People With Brain Damage Believe Their Loved Ones Have Been Replaced by Impostors

A rare neurological and psychiatric condition called Capgras syndrome can cause someone to believe that a spouse, child, or close friend has been replaced by an identical-looking impostor.

The person may recognize their loved one’s face but feel that something is deeply wrong with their identity.

Researchers believe this phenomenon can involve a disruption between facial recognition and the emotional feeling of familiarity. Capgras syndrome has been associated with conditions such as dementia, schizophrenia, and certain brain injuries.
