The Brain Itself Cannot Feel Pain
Despite processing pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain has no pain receptors of its own. That’s why surgeons can sometimes perform awake brain surgery while a patient is conscious. However, surrounding tissues like the scalp, skull, blood vessels, and the membranes covering the brain do contain pain-sensitive nerves, which is why headaches and migraines can be extremely painful.
