Some People Can’t Recognize Their Own Face

Most people instantly recognize themselves in a mirror, but individuals with severe forms of prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, may not. This neurological disorder affects the brain’s ability to recognize faces, even though vision and intelligence remain completely normal.

In mild cases, someone may struggle to recognize acquaintances or celebrities. In more severe cases, a person may fail to recognize close family members, friends, or even their own reflection. Instead, they rely on voices, hairstyles, clothing, body shape, or the way someone walks to identify people.

Prosopagnosia is often caused by damage to a specific region of the brain after a stroke or injury, but some people are born with it due to genetic factors. Researchers estimate that about 2% of the population may have some degree of face blindness.
