Human hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin, which also makes up the outer layer of the skin and nails. Keratin gives hair its strength and elasticity. Additionally, human hair contains melanin, the pigment responsible for its color. There are two types of melanin: eumelanin, which produces brown or black hair, and pheomelanin, which produces red and yellow hues.
