People can recognize that their thoughts are irrational and still be unable to stop them. This is especially common in obsessive-compulsive disorder. A person may fully understand that a fear or intrusive thought is unreasonable, yet still experience intense anxiety and feel driven to perform compulsive behaviors. This is one reason telling someone to “just stop thinking about it” usually does not help.
