A bacterium can survive the stomach’s highly acidic environment for decades. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can colonize the stomach lining despite stomach acid. Many infected people have no obvious symptoms, but the infection is an important cause of peptic ulcers and chronic gastritis and is associated with an increased risk of certain stomach cancers.
