Some brain disorders can change a person’s sense of smell before more obvious symptoms appear.
Reduced ability to smell can occur in neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease, sometimes years before characteristic movement symptoms. However, loss of smell is common and does not by itself mean someone has Parkinson’s.
