A damaged spleen can occasionally heal itself by growing functioning spleen tissue elsewhere.
After traumatic spleen rupture or surgery, tiny pieces of splenic tissue can sometimes implant elsewhere in the abdomen and develop their own blood supply. This unusual condition is called splenosis and may be discovered accidentally years later during imaging or surgery.
