People susceptible to malignant hyperthermia may appear completely healthy until exposed to certain anesthetic drugs. The inherited susceptibility can cause uncontrolled calcium release inside skeletal muscle cells, leading to severe muscle rigidity, rapidly rising carbon dioxide levels, dangerous metabolic changes, and potentially a dramatic increase in body temperature. It is a medical emergency.
