A rare condition can make muscle and connective tissue gradually turn into bone. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) causes bone to form in places where it normally shouldn’t, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Even relatively minor injuries can sometimes trigger new bone formation, which is one reason unnecessary surgery or trauma can be particularly problematic for people with FOP.
