Many miserable cold and flu symptoms come from your own immune system. When your immune system detects a respiratory virus, it releases chemical signals that coordinate the body’s defenses. That inflammatory response contributes to symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, congestion, and a general feeling of being unwell. In other words, some of what makes you feel terrible is actually evidence that your immune system has recognized the infection and is responding to it.
