Some blood disorders can actually change the shape of red blood cells. In hereditary spherocytosis, red blood cells become unusually round rather than having their normal flexible, disc-like shape. Because these cells have difficulty passing through the spleen, they may be destroyed sooner than normal, potentially causing anemia and jaundice.
