Certain heart disorders can be caused by abnormal proteins accumulating in the heart. In cardiac amyloidosis, abnormal proteins build up within heart tissue, making the heart walls thicker and stiffer and potentially leading to heart failure or abnormal rhythms. One form, transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), is increasingly recognized in older adults and can sometimes be mistaken for more common forms of age-related heart disease.
