Mental Disorders Can Affect Decision-Making Without Lowering Intelligence
A person can have a very high IQ yet struggle with everyday decision-making because of a mental disorder.
Conditions such as:
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Bipolar disorder
- Anxiety disorders
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
can interfere with planning, impulse control, emotional regulation, and executive function. This means someone may be highly intelligent but still find it difficult to manage daily responsibilities, relationships, or finances during periods when symptoms are active.
Intelligence and mental health are separate aspects of brain function, which is why mental disorders can affect people across every education level and profession.
