Some Mental Disorders Can Affect the Sense of Smell
Researchers have found that certain psychiatric and neurological conditions are associated with changes in a person’s ability to identify or detect odors.
Reduced smell sensitivity has been observed in people with conditions such as:
- Schizophrenia
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Major depressive disorder
Scientists are studying whether smell testing could someday help identify certain disorders earlier, although it is not currently used as a standalone diagnostic tool.
