Healthy People Can Carry Thousands of Mutated Cells Without Ever Knowing

Many people assume that every cell in the body contains identical DNA, but that’s not true. As cells divide throughout life, random genetic mutations naturally occur. By middle age, the average person has millions of cells carrying harmless mutations.

Most of these altered cells are detected and destroyed by the immune system or simply stop dividing. However, if certain mutations affect genes that control cell growth or repair, they can contribute to disorders such as cancer or other genetic diseases.

Interesting fact: Scientists estimate that nearly every healthy adult carries cells with mutations commonly associated with cancer—even if they never develop the disease.
