Many people think muscle disorders only weaken the muscles used for movement. However, certain inherited conditions—such as some forms of muscular dystrophy—can first damage the heart muscle. In some individuals, irregular heartbeats or heart failure may appear before noticeable weakness in the arms or legs, making early cardiac screening especially important.
