Did You Know!
Your Skin Can Reveal Hidden Internal Diseases
Doctors often diagnose internal health conditions by examining changes in the skin. For example:
- A dark, velvety rash around the neck or armpits (acanthosis nigricans) may signal insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.
- A butterfly-shaped facial rash can be an early sign of lupus.
- Yellowing of the skin (jaundice) may indicate liver or gallbladder disease.
- Persistent itching without a visible rash can sometimes be linked to kidney disease, thyroid disorders, or certain blood cancers.
Because the skin is the body’s largest organ, unexpected changes can sometimes provide the first clue to an underlying medical condition before other symptoms appear.
