Many people think muscle disorders only impact movement, but certain conditions can damage the heart muscle long before noticeable weakness develops.

For example, some forms of muscular dystrophy and inherited myopathies can lead to cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart’s ability to pump blood. In some cases, heart problems are the first symptom doctors detect, even before patients experience difficulty walking or lifting objects.
