The Pancreas Can Be Damaged Long Before Diabetes Is Diagnosed
The pancreas produces insulin, but it can gradually lose function years before a person develops Type 2 diabetes. Research suggests blood sugar regulation may begin deteriorating a decade or more before diagnosis. During this period, subtle symptoms such as increased thirst, fatigue, and unexplained hunger may appear but are often overlooked.
Why it’s surprising: By the time diabetes is diagnosed, a substantial portion of insulin-producing pancreatic cells may already be impaired.
