Within the bone marrow, a spongy tissue found inside bones, hematopoiesis occurs. This is the process by which stem cells in the bone marrow develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. These blood cells are vital for oxygen transport, immune function, and clotting respectively. The marrow produces around 500 billion blood cells daily in an adult human.
